What's better....
Finding $10 in a pair of old "skinny" pants
OR
Fitting into the old "skinny" pants.
Well, I think for anyone, anytime who has lost any amount of weight, you know that it is definitely the latter.
What a great idea though?!
I have had these pants since, well, I believe I remember buying them in Daytona one year...I think the year I worked newly transitioned Verizon (from Alltel) hospitality in February. I had zero track pants and these were the purchase. Though, I don't think I got to wear them many times because they were too tight. I have the bad habit of buying things a little too small, because afterall, I'm on my way to losing lb's and want to have them fit me. and then I stop losing lb's...they don't fit me...then they just sit in my closet. or sit in a box. and move from city to city with me. :-)
I'm sure I'm not the only one. But I am very much looking forward to getting rid of my old too-big clothes. no need to keep clothes. no need to keep clothes for just in case. Here there is just no room to store things, so I look forward to taking yet another bag of items to the goodwill very soon. Dropping clothes at the goodwill also does something for cleaning out mind-space it seems.
This past week was awesome.
I went to the orientation for NY Cares, a volunteer organization city-wide. I am hopeful I get myself out and actually volunteer with it. In Charlotte, my friend Twix and I went to this Charlotte volunteer orientation, but we never actually volunteered. well not for that organization at least. I think they kinda spoke it on us when they said 2 out of 3 people that come to these orientations, we never hear anything else from. It's like they set themselves up for that one.
The orientation leader was this sweet old British man that did a fabulous job talking about all the areas of need. He said over 1Million people in the city are below the poverty line which is $18k/year for a parent with 1 child and $22k/yr for a family with 2 children. [these numbers I could be slightly mis-quoting, but it's about right] Basically, there are a lot of people that need a lot of help. Children need help to stay up to speed with their classmates. People in nursing homes often times just sit in their wheel chair all day, and volunteers can come alongside and play bingo or board games. Seems quite worthwhile, doesn't it? I'm thinking of signing up for Tax Preparation. I mean I do like numbers. You have to take a class and get some training, but basically you help people file their taxes for free. They helped 9k families last year file their taxes and got back 18.1 million dollars in refunds for those families. It was about $1700 per family. A lot of families don't know that the government owes them this money, and so won't get it. It's also important as it is putting money back into the NYC economy. so pretty cool. I think I might sign up for that. I know it is so dorky, but I quite like doing the turbo tax even on my own taxes. I sure hope their computer systems are set up such that the amounts received back or owed tally up like turbo tax does...isn't it fun when you punch in a number and then...like a slot machine...it re-tallies!! You cross your fingers that it re-tallies in your benefit, instead of the other way around.
So good things there. I'm excited, though a little anxious about going out to some of these first events. The shy person in me comes out. They also have a lot of opportunities to volunteer with pets or with gardening around the city. The orientation leader said there is something for everyone - whether you like things with 2 legs, 4 legs or no legs at all! (and i assume he wasn't referencing amputees, though maybe...)
Thursday night and Friday night I got to go to this "God at Work" series thing to hear christians talk about their life as professionals. So much goodness for me out of this. I ponder a lot with how this whole thing works - life, work, God. It was cool to meet other professionals around the area in an easy environment. We had dinner, got to hear a speaker, had convo at our table. I could write 7 blogposts about just these two nights, but all-in, a fabulous time and I'm really excited about the potential here of meeting interesting professionals around the city and learning how to take God's purpose into the workplace. ....The topics for the two sessions were Ambition & Work-Life balance, and then Stress at Work or something. lots of good conversations and thoughts.
well, i'm finishing my coffee before going around the corner to my local hardware store to purchase paint. well i need lights, paint and spray paint. I'm taking apart this gorgeous shelf I have and am going to use the wood as shelving in my apartment. the shelf is lovely, but considering my mom pulled it off the side of the street for me, and paid a homeless person $10 to use his cart to bring it to my apartment (this is no lie) , I thought to myself, no point to go purchase any wood, when I have this lovely wood sitting here that is mine and I can use! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle PEOPLE!
I'm revamping my living quarters and very excited to show you the final product. although, I don't have before photos really, i am still excited to show you. My loveseat will be delivered this week. okay, let me show you this...
I ordered from overstock.com.
I've never purchased a piece of living room furniture before, so as much as spending the $$ pains me, I am very excited about this piece. It got great reviews, and even if it is not comfortable at all, it is cute as a button. but let's hope it's comfortable as well.
Also, would like to thank Natalie O., my talented interior decorator from afar. I don't purchase or make any decor decisions without her input. If you've seen Nat's home, you know why.
off to buy paint. happy saturday, lovelies.
