Yall! Getting to work
in the summer in New York City is NO JOKE!
It is HOT!! It’s hot walking the
3 blocks to the subway – that’s enough to get the sweat drippin’ down my back. Then while I wait on the platform for the
subway, you just try to not move and stand as a statue and feel your heart rate
start to drop. Sometimes I close my eyes
as I breathe very slowly.
Now from here, things can go up or down.
If it’s the just right time (I don’t know this exact time
probably because it’s earlier and I’m never early) the subway train is not
entirely full and the train has great air conditioning. They all have air conditioning (unless it’s
broken) but some works better than others.
Those days when the air is pumping and the quantitative body heat is low
– getting on the train is a welcome reprieve.
I then have about 17 minutes to cool off before getting off at the next
station where the hot air will gush over my entire body.
Some days though, the train is not so delightful.
Like this morning.
So many people. So hot. Bodies touching me. Eck!!
I take the required number of steps to get in to a secure place on the
train and assume the same head down, eyes closed, slow breathing as before.
The hotter it gets, the less clothes people (and me) are
wearing. Sweaty bodies against me.
gross. This morning wasn’t a sweaty body
against me but this dude in a suit on my back.
I just keep squeezing away.
After I arrive at Union Square, there is the walk under the
street, then the one block walk to my building and waiting for the
elevator. When I step onto the sixth
floor and feel the air conditioner blowing cold air out of my office – it’s
like – I have MADE IT!
People say summer in the city is amazing, but this is hot,
and we still have July and August to go.
I didn’t mind winter that much. We really haven’t had much of a spring, more
rain. Fall will be glorious.
